AFTER a suspension of 15 years due to civil unrest and insurgency, Uganda Railways Corp is planning to restore passenger and freight services on its 509 km Northern line between Tororo and Pakwach. Acting Managing Director Bugeni Buwolya announced in mid-September that work had begun to clear bushes, earth and anthills off the tracks.

Despite its current financial constraints, URC has budgeted USh4bn towards the restoration of the line, including the overhaul of locos, rolling stock and signalling. Work is being concentrated on the first 56 km from Tororo to Mbala. Buwolya is planning to seek government funds for work on the next 322 km section between Mbala and Gulu.
