NETHERLANDS:?National operator NS and infrastructure manager ProRail have been conducting trials with a patio heater on the platforms at Amsterdam Amstel station.
Passengers standing on the platforms in the open air and feeling the cold can obtain 4 min of free warmth at the press of a button. The trials ran until the end of March and Transport Minister Camiel Eurlings eagerly awaits the results of the experiment. Some of the energy required to run this experiment is gained from photovoltaic cells mounted on the station roof, but there have been questions raised as to whether the facility can conform to the railway’s environmental objectives.
