SALT LAKE CITY opened the 4 km University extension of its TRAX light rail line on December 15, with a ceremony at Rice-Eccles Stadium, the final stop on the line. The US$118·5m project was completed in just 16 months, earning SLC Rail Constructors a $2m bonus for finishing ahead of the Winter Olympics.

Alternate trains heading south along the main line from Delta Center will serve the University. As yet there are no current plans for direct services to the branch from the southern terminus at Sandy.

Utah Transit Authority has signed an agreement with the state Department of Transportation and the University of Utah paving the way for a 2·4 km, four-station extension from Rice-Eccles Stadium to University Hospital to be built by the end of 2003. The cost is estimated at $89·3m, including $20m for seven new LRVs. UTA has applied for a 60% grant from the Federal Transit Administration.
