ALK Associates has been retained by Union Pacific to design and implement a locomotive management system for its Harriman Dispatching Centre in Omaha, Nebraska. Designed to improve service reliability and help UP make the most effective use of its available motive power, the system will provide information on trains and the railway’s 6500 locomotives, using single-screen representations of the operating situation at each yard.
The yard displays will show the motive power reserved for each train, the operating condition of each locomotive and when the next inspection is due under Federal Railroad Administration regulations. A recommended operating plan for the next 48h will also be displayed, with information updated on-screen as field events occur.
