Gulzar Sultan has been named Additional Managing Director at Railway Construction Corp of Pakistan, where Maqbool Ahmad Magsi becomes Project Director in place of Asif Mateen who has become Deputy Chief Engineer, Bridges.

Denis Martin will step down as Director, Rolling Stock at SNCF on September 1 2008. He will be succeeded by Alain Bullot, who is currently a Director at Fret SNCF.

Minoru Arai has taken over as Director, Technology Planning Department, and Director General, Research & Development Centre, for East Japan Railway. He succeeds Takashi Endo who has become Executive Director of East Japan Transport Technology Co.

Four of the five nominees proposed by investment funds TCI and 3G for election to the CSX board (RG 6.08 p359) have been elected, according to preliminary figures published on July 16 by independent scrutineer IVC Associates. CSX had not announced the results of the vote at its annual general meeting on June 25, claiming the result was too close. TCI founder Chris Hohn, 3G Managing Director Alex Behring, former CN director Gilbert Lamphere and London Underground Managing Director Tim O'Toole will join the 12-strong board, subject to confirmation of the appointments at a reconvened AGM on July 25.

Harry Hondius, Railway Gazette International's Belgian correspondent, was awarded an honorary Doctorate by Prof Dr-Ing Dr hc Dietrich Hoeborn, Dekan of the Architecture, Civil Engineering, Machinery & Safety faculty at the Bergische Universität Wuppertal on July 11, recognising his work over the past 20 years in reporting and explaining the development of low-floor trams and light rail vehicles. The university's Rector Prof Dr rer pol Volker Ronge said Hondius had 'made a name world-wide for his technical understanding', and had identified as early as 2001 the risk that an excess of innovations might not be commercially sustainable in the longer term.
