James Bolger, who was Prime Minister of the government which privatised the New Zealand rail network in 1993, has been named Chairman of the renationalised rail operator KiwiRail.

Gary Touryan has been named Senior Vice-President, Regional Operations, Rail, at consultancy firm Halcrow.

Brian Roche has been appointed chairman of the New Zealand Transport Agency, which came into being on August 1 following the abolition of Land Transport New Zealand and Transit New Zealand. Roche has held a number of government posts including Establishment Chair of the Auckland Regional Transport Authority. Garry Moore, Paul Fitzharris, Bryan Jackson, Grahame Hall, Alick Shaw, Mike Williams and Christine Caughey have also joined the NZTA board.

Robert Niven has been named Head of Development & Planning at London’s Docklands Light Railway, where he will take overall responsibility for projects to be completed in time for the 2012 Olympic Games. He succeeds Richard de Cani, who is now ?Director of Major Projects at Transport for London.

Tim Parker will no longer be taking over as Chairman of TfL from September as previously reported (RG 7.08 p458). London Mayor Boris Johnson has decided the role should be occupied by ?an elected official and will retain the post himself, although Parker will remain on the board as an advisor.

In further developments at TfL, Paralympic gold medal winner Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson has been appointed to the board, along with fellow new members Bob Oddy, Steve Wright, Keith Williams, Charles Belcher and Daniel Moylan. Christopher Garnett, Tony West, Eva Lindholm, Mike Hodgkinson, Patrick O’Keeffe, Judith Hunt and Peter Anderson have all been reappointed to the board.
