IN TOTAL 83 injured passengers were mentioned in media reports about the recent low-speed derailment of a commuter train near Durban.

Yet one of the first paramedics to arrive at the scene said he had only managed to find three injured people. It is thought that bystanders spotted an opportunity to seek compensation from Metrorail, and subsequently claimed to have been hurt in the derailment.

’Injured’ passengers were asked to show a valid Metrorail ticket before being allowed into an ambulance, and as a result several of the emergency vehicles had to be turned away un-needed.
