Faiveley Transport is supplying 250 TOM data recorders to Alstom Transport, meeting ERTMS requirements and capable of resisting temperatures as high as 700í C as well as loads of 2 tonnes. The data recorders are being installed in tilting trains for Virgin West Coast, Class 334 EMUs for ScotRail, Class 175 DMUs for First North Western and Class 180 DMUs for First Great Western.
In the course of remodelling work at London’s Euston station, Balfour Beatty Rail Maintenance has become the first commercial user of a rigid safety barrier system developed by Vortok International. Insulated for use in areas with DC third rail electrification, the barrier features supports which clamp to the foot of flat-bottomed or bull head rail.
Metalastik has been awarded a contract worth £1·6m to supply flexible mountings and suspension components to the Train Maintenance Services and Train Part Services divisions of Adtranz (UK) Ltd. Under the two-year contract, Metalastik rubber/metal parts including traction links, chevrons and bushings will be called off as required to stock Adtranz maintenance depots.
Survey Supplies is to provide and maintain base stations and ancillary equipment for a Trimble GPS system that will be used for surveying and positioning construction equipment on Section 1 of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link. Six base stations and three repeaters are being installed along Section 1 from Cheriton to Fawkham Junction.
Railweight has supplied a Weighline in-motion train weighing system to English Welsh & Scottish Railway, installed at E H Bennett’s coal teminal at Avonmouth near Bristol. Empty wagons are weighed as they enter the facility, and again at around 8 km/h when leaving loaded.
Woodville Polymer Engineering is supplying 54 inter-car gangways and 54 inflatable rubber train ends for 27 three-car EMUs under construction by Adtranz Sweden for Øresund services. Danish State Railways has ordered 17 of the EMUs and Swedish State Railways the remaining 10 trainsets.
National Grid Co of Great Britain has awarded ABB Power T&D a £7m turnkey contract to design and build a substation on the West Coast Main Line at Patford Bridge near Northampton. Due for completion by the end of 2000, the substation will take power at 400 kV directly from the national supply network, and will have two 80MVA power transformers to feed trackside auto-transformers providing traction current at 25 kV.
