JANUARY 1 2004 sees the transformation of RailNetEurope into a free-standing non-profit organisation, with its own offices in Wien, following a decision by the steering committee on December 3.
RNE was set up by the European Infrastructure Managers group as a forum to establish co-operation for allocation of international freight train paths (RG 11.02 p668) in line with EU Directive 2001/14/EC.
Through co-operation with the ’One-Stop Shops’ in each country, RNE has already started to create a portfolio of tailor-made or pre-constructed paths for use by international freight operators. RNE is now expected to take over capacity allocation for all international traffic from the existing Forum Train Europe by the end of 2006.
