TWO bridge abutments and the associated wingwalls on the City Airport extension of London’s Docklands Light Railway are being constructed using the Tensar Wall System, with modular pre-cast concrete facing blocks and granular fill reinforced by layers of geogrid keyed to the wall.
AMEC is using recycled crushed concrete as reinforced fill for the walls, and selected Tensar’s design because of the high sulphate content of the crushed concrete. The geogrids are produced from inert high-density polyethylene, which unlike galvanised steel strips will not suffer from corrosion.
The facing blocks are available in a range of colours and finishes, including the flint block with split-face finish which AMEC is using in London, and all components are designed to be lifted by one person.
