TWO wagons which have been modified to reduce emitted noise were officially launched by Jacqueline Tammenons-Bakker, Director General, Freight Transport, at the Dutch Ministry of Transport & Public Works’ in a ceremony held in Den Haag on November 25.

Noise pollution is of particular concern in the highly urbanised and densely populated Netherlands. In 2002 the Ministry, Railion and NedTrain Consulting began the GePiDo project. This will test ways of cutting noise from wagons and identify the most effective wheel profile and damping and braking methods; it will also assess life-cycle costs.

During the past year two Tapps wagons used on dolomite trains operating between Veendam and Hermalle in Belgium were fitted with a range of composite brake blocks and wheel dampers, to allow analysis of noise under operating conditions.

Following the test, the Valdunes 25T VMS wheels with Schrey & Veit noise absorbers supplied by RTM were selected for installation on the complete train of 29 wagons, enabling larger-scale verification of the findings until mid-2006. The wagons are being modified at NedTrain Cargo Support’s Zwolle workshop, with two vehicles completed each week until April.

According to GePiDo Project manager Marcel Roozendaal, the composite brake blocks mean ’wheels remain smoother and the trains make less noise. The squeaking braking sound also diminishes considerably.’
