UKRAINE: Minister of Transport & Communications Yosyp Vinsky has announced the designation of a number of UZ’s major inter-city routes as dedicated passenger lines under a US$6·5bn project to permit the operation of 200 km/h services by the time the country co-hosts the UEFA European football championship in 2012 (RG 4.08 p239).
The designation covers the routes from Kyiv through Poltava and Krasnohrad to Kharkiv, Donetsk and Dnipropetrovs’k, and the lines from Kyiv via Zhmerynka to Odesa and L’viv.
So far this year US$65m has been spent on infrastructure works to enable freight traffic to be diverted to other lines.
H On July 7 Dutch consultancy Movares signed a memorandum to undertake a study into the business case for constructing a standard gauge line between the Polish border and L’viv, where a major redevelopment of the station is planned.
