No go at Lo Wu

MORE than 200 passengers were stranded at Hong Kong’s Lo Wu border crossing on September 29, after refusing to leave a KCR East Rail train. Newspapers had incorrectly reported that opening hours at the checkpoint had been extended by 30 min to handle extra passengers on the national holiday.

Told at Sheung Shui that the checkpoint had already closed, the passengers refused to alight. As the train was blocking the line, the driver was instructed to continue to Lo Wu, where the passengers found that the checkpoint had indeed closed. Around 58 passengers stayed at the border overnight, 100 were taken back to Sheung Shui by train, and another 50 were escorted back by the police.
