ON AUGUST 3, Bombardier Transportation confirmed that it had been awarded a C$205m contract for design and supply of electrical and mechanical systems for the 21 km SkyTrain Line 2 in Vancouver. Rapid Transit 2000 Ltd had already awarded the company a C$165m contract for 60 ALRT MkII cars last October under a ’Fast Track’ process intended to see the first stage of the line open by mid-2001. The first vehicles are scheduled for delivery towards the end of next year.
Line 2 will run from Broadway to Lougheed with branches to New Westminster and Coquitlam (RG 12.98 p829). The E&M contract covers automatic train control, communications, power supply and distribution systems; the trackwork and power rails, platform and intrusion detection systems; engineering and integration; and testing and commissioning of the guideway.
