DATA on sleeper condition can be recorded and analysed with TieInspect, produced by Zeta-Tech Associates. TieInspect consists of a palm top computer linked to an eight-buttoned handheld input device. This is used to enter data about sleeper condition, type and location for later transfer to a database. Reports can then be generated to show the exact locations of defects, and maintenance or replacement scheduled.

Burlington Northern Santa Fe is to carry out its 2002 sleeper maintenance programme using 23 TieInspect systems, and Banverket has purchased 14 units.
