FUENLABRADA, a town of 200000 inhabitants 17 km south of Madrid, is the location for live trials started last month of the BIT city-wide smart card ticketing system, which has been under development since 1997. The multimodal card will eventually encompass all public transport-metro, EMT bus and Renfe suburban trains- and will be introduced throughout the city over a four-year period at a cost of €50m.
Initial trials are confined to a fleet of 30 buses, but will shortly be extended to Fuenlabrada’s Renfe suburban station and the new Metrosur Line 12 (left).
