SPANISH National Railways has taken delivery of the first three of seven tilting TRD DMUs ordered from CAF in May 1999 for a total of Pts3·7bn. The SIBI tilting system developed by CAF (RG 12.99 p754) is expected to be fully operational by September. Pre-programmed with route characteristics, SIBI uses both distance measurement and GPS to determine train position, ensuring that tilt is actuated at the correct location. GPS has replaced track-mounted balises, which can be displaced or damaged by vandals or during track maintenance.
Renfe’s Regional business unit has 16 non-tilting TRDs currently in service on the Sevilla - M
