Sir - A small correction is needed to the report on the vertical separation and renationalisation of track in Victoria (RG 5.07 p260). The Melbourne - Adelaide route and the lines in western Victoria were converted from 1 600?mm to standard gauge in 1995. This interstate line and the standard gauge North East line (the Albury - Melbourne section of the Sydney - Melbourne route) were subsequently transferred to Australian Rail Track Corp when the infrastructure manager commenced business in 1998.It was the remaining non-urban broad and standard gauge tracks in Victoria which were leased to RailAmerica (trading as Freight Australia) in 1999. The lease transferred to Pacific National when it took over Freight Australia in 2004.Melbourne’s heavy rail operations were franchised to National Express and Connex in 1999. National Express walked away from its franchises in 2002, since when Connex has managed all the urban heavy rail.Peter KainBureau of Transport & Regional Economics Canberra, Australia
