INDIA: Following successful deployment on the Howrah – Dhanbad route last year, the first air-conditioned double-deck train to operate from Delhi to Jaipur was flagged off by Minister of Railways Mukul Roy and Chief Minister of Delhi Sheila Dikshit on August 24.

The stainless steel coaches have been designed and manufactured by IR’s Rail Coach Factory in Kapurthala. The Railways Minister said the design was a ‘mighty challenge’ because of the need to not to exceed IR standards for length, width and height.

Each double-deck coach accommodates 120 passengers, rather than 78 in the Shatabdi-type single-deck cars, meaning more passengers can travel ‘at most reasonable costs with the comfort of air-conditioned travel.’
