RUSSIA: The use of double-deck trains on the 54 km Moscow Central Ring line is being studied, as ridership has reached 550 000 passengers/day and the infrastructure is now at maximum capacity.
Maksim Liksutov, Deputy Mayor for Transport, said the domestic production of double-deck electric trains would strengthen the country’s economy by providing domestic manufacturers with new orders. There would be a requirement to develop new competences and replacements for imports which are subject to international sanctions following the invasion of Ukraine.
‘And, of course, it will increase the comfort of our passengers’, he said.
Services are currently operated using Siemens/Sinara Lastochka EMUs, with 242 trains each way on weekdays and 211 on weekends. At peak times trains run every 4 min.
