USA: National passenger operator Amtrak has beaten four other bidders to win the next contract to operate Southern California Regional Rail Authority’s Metrolink commuter services.

Serving the greater Los Angeles region, Metrolink is the USA’s third largest commuter rail network, totalling 650 route-km. Before the pandemic it was carrying 690 million passenger-km/year. Amtrak is the incumbent operator, having taken over from Connex in June 2010.

The new operating contract runs for 4½ years from January 1 2021 to June 30 2025.

‘We look forward to building upon our many years of partnership and helping the agency achieve its bold vision of growth and improvement’, said Amtrak President Stephen Gardner on December 1.
