RUSSIA: A northwestern extension of St Petersburg metro Line 3 was inaugurated on May 26.
The 5 km underground extension from Primorskaya to Begovaya includes an intermediate station at Novokrestovskaya on Krestovsky Island. This station serves Saint-Petersburg Stadium, which will be one of the venues of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, which starts on June 14.
Metrostroy was the main contractor on the 36·8bn rouble project. Both new stations have platform screen doors.
- A southern extension of metro Line 5 from Mezhdunarodnaya to Shushary is planned to open later this year.
