GERMANY: The first refurbished Hamburg S-Bahn Class 474 electric multiple-unit was unveiled by Hamburg Transport Minister Andreas Rieckhof, HVV CEO Lutz Aigner and S-Bahn Hamburg GmbH CEO Kay Uwe Arnecke on January 13.
This follows the presentation of a prototype Class 474 Plus a year ago. All 112 Class 474 EMUs are to be refurbished by 2021 under a €70m programme. The first 20 are due to be ready this year.
The three-car sets are receiving walk-through gangways, multi-function spaces in the centre car and passenger information screens.
The Class 474 fleet will be augmented by 60 Class 490 EMUs being built by Bombardier, which are due to enter service by the end of 2018.
