USA: San Diego Association of Governments has awarded the Mid-Coast Transit Contractors joint venture led by Stacy & Witbeck and including Herzog and Skanska a $921·8m contract to build the Mid-Coast Trolley light rail extension.

The 17·6 km extension of the Blue Line would run from Old Town to UC San Diego with nine stops. Preparatory work is already underway, and a groundbreaking ceremony for the main work is due to take place on October 22. Parsons Brinkerhoff, Kimley Horn and HDR are acting as designers.

Last month SANDAG signed a $1·04bn Full Funding Grant Agreement with the Federal Transit Administration that would cover around half of the $2·17bn total project cost. Passenger services are due to start in 2021.
