CHILE: The first of 37 driverless trainsets that CAF is supplying for lines 3 and 6 of the Santiago metro was unloaded at Valparaíso port on April 6.
In November 2013 a consortium of CAF and Thales won a US$451·9m contract to supply rolling stock and signalling for the two underground standard gauge lines in the Chilean capital. CAF is supplying 23 five-car trainsets for Line 3 and 14 for Line 6. Thales is supplying CBTC signalling designed for headways of 90 sec. Both lines will be electrified at 750 V DC overhead.
The air-conditioned trains are 120 m long with capacity for 1 285 passengers. Maximum speed is 80 km/h.
Scheduled to open later this year, the 15·3 km Line 6 will link Lo Errázuriz to Los Leones with 11 stations. Line 3 will have 22 stations on a 21·7 km alignment between Plaza de Quilicura and Hospital Militar. It is due to open in June 2018.
