USA: ‘Silicon Valley’s train needs wi-fi’, said Caltrain Executive Director Michelle Bouchard when the San Francisco to San Jose commuter operator awarded Nomad Digital a contract to provide digital connectivity for the 19 double-deck electric multiple-units being supplied by Stadler.
Caltrain received four proposals for the project to provide public wi-fi and data links between the EMUs and the control centre.
Alstom subsidiary Nomad was the highest-ranked bidder, and has been awarded a $20·9m contract covering system implementation and deployment, and a second contract worth $5·6m covering four years of operation and maintenance support.
‘Onboard wi-fi will allow our riders to get a head start on the work day, or decompress on their way home, staying connected with the world outside’, said Bouchard on December 16. ‘This is one more reason for commuters to choose Caltrain over sitting in highway gridlock.’
