INDIA: Alstom has awarded ABB a contract to supply 1 600 traction transformers for the 800 twin-section Prima India electric freight locomotives it is to build for use on routes including the future Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor.
The transformers are to be manufactured at ABB's Vadodara facility in Gujarat, supporting the government's 'Make in India' initiative to encourage domestic production.
The 9 MW locomotives are to be produced at a factory at Madhepura in Bihar which is being developed under a 2015 joint venture agreement between Alstom and Indian Railways. Deliveries are scheduled for 2018-28.
ABB said the compact 25 kV 50 Hz transformers would be designed for demanding conditions including extreme temperatures and voltage fluctuations.
