EUROPE: Shift2Rail, the European Committee for Standardization and the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization have signed a memorandum of understanding formalising their existing collaboration and agreeing to work together to identify areas where standardisation can contribute to innovation in the rail sector.
Examples of such areas include collaborating on multimodal ticketing and passenger information, making rail freight more competitive and better equipped to meet customer needs by benefiting from digitalisation, and contributing to the development of concepts such as the certification of new materials.
‘The objective of this consolidated co-operation is to boost the competitiveness of the railway sector by accelerating the market uptake of innovative solutions and enhancing the economic benefits thanks to standardisation’, said Carlo Borghini, Executive Director of the Shift2Rail Joint Undertaking, on June 10. ‘Two excellent examples are the ongoing work on the digital automatic coupler and the future generic framework for virtual testing which will be provided as an official Shift2Rail contribution to the relevant CEN Standardisation Working Group.’
