NEW ZEALAND: CAF has been awarded a firm order to supply a further 23 electric multiple-units to Auckland.

The contract announced on January 25 is worth in excess of €130m including maintenance until the end of 2025. There is an option for up to five more EMUs.

In 2011 Auckland Transport awarded CAF a contract to supply an initial 57 EMUs for entry into service from 2014 and provide 12 years of maintenance. An NZ$133m order for a further 15 units and eight years of maintenance followed in 2017.

The latest batch of 25 kV 50 Hz EMUs will be similar to the 72 previously supplied, with two driving motors cars and one intermediate low-floor trailer providing a total capacity of 380 passengers. They will have stainless steel bodies with two passenger doors per coach side.

Suburban rail services in New Zealand’s largest city are now operated under contract to Auckland Transport by the Auckland One Rail joint venture of Singapore’s ComfortDelGro and Australia’s UGL Rail Services, which took over from Transdev on January 17.
