DENMARK: Local railway operator Midtjyske Jernbaner has selected Siemens Mobility to supply seven battery multiple-units.
The two-car Mireo Plus B units are to be deployed on the Holstebro – Skjern and Vemb – Lemvig – Thyborøn lines in northwest Jylland from the end of 2024. They will replace eight older diesel multiple-units: a mix of 20-year old Siemens Desiros and 40-year old Lynette sets.
The procurement has been backed by the Midtjylland Region and the national government to provide a basis for the wider use of battery trains on regional routes to support carbon neutrality targets.
‘We have been through a long and educational tender process and we are pleased to have reached this point, where we can tell our employees, customers and the rest of the world about the outcome’, said Midtjyske Jernbaner Chairman Arne Lægaard on March 15.
‘Two suppliers chose to submit final bids. After careful evaluation, we came to the conclusion that it is Siemens Mobility that will help to put us on the Danish map as the first railway with battery trains, and we look forward to the co-operation that will help bring us to a greener future.’
