POLAND: Cargounit has ordered a further five Siemens Mobility Vectron MS electric locomotives for delivery in 2023-24. The leasing company’s CEO Łukasz Boroń said there is high demand for modern multisystem locomotives from Polish and foreign customers, owing to ‘the continuing boom in the rail freight market in Poland and throughout Europe’.
The order announced on July 1 has been placed as an option on an existing contract, taking Cargounit’s total order to 28 Vectron and Smartron locos.
‘Russian hostilities in Ukraine are contributing to Ukrainian producers looking for other routes to export agricultural products due to the Black Sea blockade’, said Boroń. ’The majority of agricultural products previously exported from Ukraine by sea will end up on rail, so carriers are looking for additional rolling stock, including locomotives.
’In addition, increased geopolitical risks are prompting global companies to seek alternative rail routes to the Silk Road for transporting products to western Europe via the countries of southeastern Europe and the Balkans. All these factors make the demand for multisystem locomotives an upward trend.’
