SPAIN: Rail & Truck Strait Union and Alpha Trains have signed lease agreements for 11 Stadler locomotives to be used on future rolling motorway services carrying lorry trailers between the port of Algeciras and the Plaza logistics site in Zaragoza.
A long-term finance lease covers seven Euro 6000 six-axle multi-system electric locomotives to be delivered from Stadler’s Albuixech plant in 2024-25, and there is also an operating lease covering four Euro 4001 diesel locos.
Fernando Pérez, Interim CEO of Alpha Trains Group, said the deal announced on March 13 is tailored to RTSU’s needs, and backed by financial support from the Ministry of Transport.
RTSU was formed by CMA CGM, Eco Rail and Marcotran to operate the rolling motorway service.
Work is currently underway to adapt the infrastructure on the 1 000 km route to the required loading gauge. Services are expected to launch in 2024, reducing CO2 emissions by more than 94 000 tonnes/year compared to road transport.
