ITALY: Following the confirmation of funding from the Lombardia region, FNM Group’s Ferrovienord has awarded Alstom a €125m firm order to supply a further 20 Coradia Stream electric multiple-units from June 2023 for use on Milano – Sondrio – Tirano services.
The order announced on April 15 has been placed within a November 2019 framework agreement which covered an initial 31 units with options for up to 30 more. The first entered services in July 2020.
The 160 km/h four-car medium-capacity 3 kV DC EMUs have 263 seats, and feature level boarding, walk-through interiors with wide gangways, LED lighting and power sockets.
The operator has branded the units Donizetti, after Bergamo-born 19th century composer Gaetano Donizetti. Similar trains operated by Trenitalia are branded Pop.
Project development, manufacturing and certification are being undertaken at Savigliano, with the traction systems coming from Sesto San Giovanni and the on-board signalling systems from Bologna.
‘In the last 10 years, Alstom has delivered 54 regional trains for Lombardia’, explained the company’s Managing Director for Italy Michele Viale when the latest order was announced. ‘The new generation of Coradia Stream represents the best solution for meeting the increasing needs of both the region’s travellers and the operator.’
