ITALY: Mercitalia has ordered a further 20 Alstom Traxx DC3 electric locomotives for delivery in 2024.
The firm order announced on September 20 has been placed using an option on a December 2017 contract for 40 locos, all of which have now been delivered. The locos will be manufactured at Alstom’s Vado Ligure site, and Alstom Italia Service will provide full maintenance.
‘Over a 10-year period, we plan to purchase 3 500 wagons and more than 300 new generation, environmentally friendly electric and hybrid locomotives, including these 20’, said Gianpiero Strisciuglio, CEO of Mercitalia Logistics. ’These locomotives are very innovative because they can be equipped to perform the last rail mile, penetrating directly into non-electrified areas such as inland terminals and ports with a quick power change, directly connecting rail transport with other transport modes.’
