SPAIN: National operator RENFE has presented the first of 14 Class 730 electro-diesel gauge changing trainsets to undergo a mid-life refurbishment in a €11m programme which is being undertaken at Talgo’s Las Matas works.
The Class 730s are rebuilds from dual-voltage Class 130 electric trainsets, and are used on high speed services involving both changes of gauge and non-electrified lines.
The refurbishment involves replacing the interior carpeting with Flotex, which combines the durability of a resilient floor with the warmth and comfort of a carpet while being washable and waterproof. Seat upholstery is being replaced by leather, as on the seats of the future Class 106 Avril trainsets.
All interior illumination has been replaced with LEDs, the toilets renovated, and all internal and external passenger information screens renewed. Sound-deadening materials have been used in the cafeteria car. Dividing baffles have been installed in the luggage racks to prevent objects falling onto passengers in the event of sudden braking.
The exterior livery has also been modified.
A further €24m is being invested in a similar programme for the refurbishment of 30 Class 130 trainsets.
