ITALY: South Tirol transport authority STA has modified its order for multi-system electric multiple-units, with Alstom now to supply eight Coradia Stream units instead of the seven Talent 3 sets originally envisaged.
In May 2019 STA awarded Bombardier Transportation a €65·8m contract to supply seven 3 kV DC, 15 kV 16·7 Hz and 25 kV 50 Hz Talent 3 units to operate cross-border services from Malles Venosta to Bolzano and Innsbruck or Lienz.
STA said the main reason for changing the order had been the delay to delivery of Talent 3 units ordered by other customers. However, the authority has taken the opportunity to increase the size of the order, using funds from the regional budget and the PNRR national reconstruction plan. The 160 km/h Coradia Stream EMUs will each provide 381 seats, 82 more than specified for the Talent 3s. Onboard ETCS equipment is also to be installed at no additional cost.
‘With Alstom, we have found a new solution for the purchase of the trains and with additional funds from the PNRR we can buy more trains with a higher passenger capacity’, explained South Tirol’s portfolio holder for transport Daniel Alfreider on April 5.
