SLOVAKIA: National operator ZSSK has selected Stadler Rail for a €77m EU co-funded contract to supply double-deck electric multiple-units to operate regional services around Bratislava.

The four six-car 25 kV 50 Hz EMUs are to be built by Stadler’s Polish plant at Siedlce. Around 4% of the contract value will be subcontracted to Slovak supplier ŽOS Vrútky, including the passenger information and signalling equipment and assistance with the approvals process. Delivery is due within 28 months of contract signing.

The TSI-compliant EMUs will be similar to the Kiss EMUs currently being delivered to Hungary’s MÁV-Start, with a maximum speed of 160 km/h and a capacity of 560 passengers including 30 in first class.

Stadler’s offer beat a bid from Škoda Transportation, which has been the only supplier of standard-gauge EMUs to ZSSK in recent years.

  • In mid-July Stadler completed the delivery of five metre-gauge rack-and-pinion EMUs for the High Tatras network, together with an electro-diesel locomotive with a snow plough.
