UK: CAF has delivered the final Class 195 Civity diesel multiple-unit to Northern, completing the 2016 order for 25 two-car and 33 three-car sets.
The final 44 vehicles were assembled at the company’s new factory in Newport, which was opened by Prince of Wales in February, making this the first project to be completed at the facility.
The DMUs join a fleet of 43 Class 331 three and four-car electric multiple-units which have also entered service, giving a combined order for Northern of 101 trains valued at around £500m.
The last Class 195 three-car unit, 195 133, was handed over at Newton Heath depot on December 4. This followed a period of test running between Preston and Carnforth, and it entered passenger service on December 9 when it worked the 05.46 from Manchester Piccadilly to Sheffield. Only set 195 021 is yet to enter service.
The 160 km/h Class 195s feature wi-fi, air-conditioning, at-seat power sockets and a passenger information system, as well as space for luggage and bicycles.
The DMUs are powered by MTU Series 1800 PowerPacks which feature the 6H 1800 R85L 13-litre 6-cylinder turbo-diesel engine. Each delivers 390 kW, with the built-in SCR unit reducing the amount of NOx produced to meet EU Stage IIIB emissions requirements. The PowerPack is linked to a ZF EcoLife six-speed transmission.
‘The completion of the order is the culmination of a successful collaboration between our company, Northern and Eversholt Rail’, said Richard Garner, CAF’s UK Director. ‘It is also the first project to be completed at our new state of the art factory in Newport, where work is underway to fulfil the contracts for West Midlands Trains and Transport for Wales.’
