UK: Network Rail has awarded J Murphy & Sons Ltd the £93·4m main works contract for the construction of Cambridge South station to serve Addenbrooke’s Hospital and the Biomedical Campus.

The contract announced on October 23 covers construction of a two-storey four platform station on the West Anglia Main Line. Facilities will include lifts providing step-free access to all platforms, accessible toilets, baby change facilities, waiting areas, space for retail/catering, pedestrians and cycle access from both sides of the railway, 1 000 cycle parking spaces and modifications to roads and crossings to facilitate access.

The station contract announced on October 23 forms part of the wider £211m Cambridge South Infrastructure Enhancements scheme to remodel the railway between Cambridge and Shepreth Branch Junction where the lines to London King’s Cross and Liverpool Street diverge.

Murphy is already undertaking enabling works under a separate contract, and will work with Alstom and the South Rail Systems Alliance to modify existing infrastructure, including track layout remodelling, installing two loops to accommodate the four-platform station, enhancements to the junction, modification of existing signalling and the closure of two private level crossings.

Completion is planned for 2025. The station will be operated by Greater Anglia, with usage predicted at 1·8 million passengers/year.

In the longer term, it would be also served by trains on the East West Rail line linking Cambridge with Bedford and Oxford.
