UK: Galliford Try has been awarded a £10m contract for the rebuilding of Perry Barr station in Birmingham, which is to be upgraded to serve venues for the next Commonwealth Games.
The station was described by Transport for the West Midlands described as ‘one of the most outdated and unattractive in the region’ when the modernisation plans were announced last year. Trains will cease calling for a year while the road-level station buildings and access stairs are replaced.
The current building will be replaced to provide a new concourse and booking office, access will be improved with the provision of lifts; the public realm between the station, bus interchange and local shops will be improved, and the existing pedestrian subway under the A34 road will be removed.
The rebuilt station ‘will be a vast improvement on what was there before and will provide a much better environment for passengers, including the future residents of the thousands of homes currently under construction in the area’, said Malcolm Holmes, Director of Rail for TfWM. ‘It is vital that we have a contractor with Galliford Try’s experience and track record on board for such a landmark project.’
Procurement was undertaking using a Pagabo framework.
