UK: High Speed 2 delivery company HS2 Ltd has called tenders for the estimated £275m contract to build the control centre and maintenance depot at Washwood Heath in Birmingham.
The depot on the 30 ha brownfield site of the former Metro-Cammell works will include a 40 000 m2 rolling stock maintenance building, washing plant, automatic vehicle inspection building and 14 stabling sidings.
The site will also house the network’s integrated control centre, as well as facilities for cleaners and drivers.
HS2 early works contractor LM completed demolition works at the site last year. Bidders are expected to be shortlisted for the single-stage design and build contract this summer, with the contract to be awarded in 2023.
‘Washwood Heath will be at the heart of the operation, and around 500 high skilled jobs based at the depot will be a major boost for the community’, said HS2 Ltd Commercial Director David Poole on February 17.
