UK: Maritime Transport has signed a 25-year lease to operate the Strategic Rail Freight Interchange which SEGRO is developing at its East Midlands Gateway logistics park in Castle Donington.
The 9 ha terminal to be completed this year will be capable of handling 16 trains/day up to 775 m long, with space to store more than 5 000 TEU. A purpose-built office will become the headquarters of Maritime’s rail business from mid-2020, housing its operations staff and training facilities and having parking for a fleet of up to 100 lorries.
‘Our intention is to use our logistics expertise within the intermodal sector to attract a significant number of new rail services to the terminal by offering a cost effective, highly reliable and environmentally efficient intermodal product’, said Maritime Transport CEO Simon Smart.
Multimodal logistics company Maritime manages rail terminals at Tilbury and Tamworth, and in January announced an agreement to take over management of DB Cargo UK’s rail terminals in Manchester and Wakefield.
