UK: Formerly Chair of the House of Commons Transport Select Committee, Huw Merriman MP has been appointed as a minister of state at the Department for Transport responsible for Rail & HS2 in the government of incoming Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.
MP for Battle in Sussex, Merriman has been a member of the transport committee since 2015 and succeeded Lilian Greenwood as Chair in 2020.
It’s been a privilege to serve on @TransportCttee since 2015, and as Chair since 2020. It’s sad to be leaving, but I would like to say a big thank you to my fellow members - past and present - and to the committee staff for all of their hard work and support over the past 7 years pic.twitter.com/eSUxD0t0mA

Responding to Merriman’s appointment, Railway Industry Association Chief Executive Darren Caplan said, ‘we welcome Huw Merriman to his new role as Minister for Rail & HS2. The minister was a respected and accessible Transport Select Committee Chair previously, and he will bring a huge amount of knowledge and experience to the role. He takes on this ministerial position at a challenging time and we wish him well in the weeks and months ahead.’
