UK: Clayton Equipment has supplied two Type CBD80 battery-diesel locomotives to the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority’s Sellafield site, where they will be used to move nuclear materials and waste on the internal rail network.
The 80 tonne Bo-Bo hybrid locomotives are powered by Stage V compliant Deutz engines.
‘Our existing fleet has done a great job keeping site operations going, but they run on diesel, have high emissions and aren’t environmentally friendly’, said Mark McSherry from the site’s railway team. ‘These new locos are hybrid; they have the cleanest diesel engines available and are able to run completely on electric with on-board battery charging.’
The £2·17m order for the two locos was placed in March 2020, and was followed in September 2021 by an order for a smaller 40-tonne battery-only 0-4-0 loco of Type CB40.
