UK: The Railway Children charity is training Northern’s conductors, customer service and station staff to spot vulnerable people on the railway and to have the confidence to intervene with help.
The work focuses on identifying individuals at risk of to abuse, addiction and intimidation, and helping with early forms of intervention.
‘Being able to spot those in need, whether they approach our teams for help or not, is really important’, said Chief Operating Office Tricia Williams.
In 2020, British Transport Police intervened in 25 997 cases involving vulnerable people. This included county lines (transporting illegal drugs) activity, mental health crises, domestic abuse and child sexual exploitation.
