UK: A modular platform concept using recycled materials has been launched with a view to reducing installation times, lowering maintenance requirements and cutting the carbon footprint of platform works.
The Footprint Modular Platform is supported on walls made from recycled rubber blocks, rather than steel or concrete. It has been developed by distributor Scott Parnell, Footprint Civil Solutions, rubber moulding manufacturer Rosehill Rail and design partner Arcadis.
According to Arcadis, the modular platform would save more than 25 000 kg of CO2 emissions for a typical 36 m platform extension, compared to traditional construction methods.
The size and weight of the rubber blocks has been limited to facilitate manual handling, which would minimise the requirement for on-track plant. Platform facings can be designed to match the existing aesthetics of a station.
