UK: Siemens Mobility has submitted an outline planning application for a £200m rolling stock plant at Goole in East Yorkshire which would manufacture and commission vehicles for the UK market.
This follows the signing last of November of a £1·5bn contract to supply 94 Inspiro London trainsets for London Underground’s Piccadilly Line. The first of these are to be produced in Wien to meet the required delivery schedule, with production then transferring to Goole.
The 42 ha Goole 36 site is close to the M62 motorway, and has 27 ha of land suitable for development. Plans include 80 000 m2 of manufacturing, commissioning and warehouse space and stabling sidings, as well as a four-storey 5 000 m2 office building.
Siemens said it plans to create up to 700 jobs, and a further 250 during construction, with an additional 1 700 potential UK supply chain roles. The first phase of the plant is expected to open in 2023, with full operation from 2025.
The company’s UK rolling stock engineering and commissioning team would also be based at the site, along with a Digital Operations Centre which would collect and analyse data from onboard systems.
