UK: ‘Living walls’ which can be attached to vending machines are being tested at Bournemouth station by South Western Railway, Decorum Vending, Regency Design and plant supplier PHS Greenleaf.
The small, self-sufficient, vertical gardens are designed to thrive in all locations, whether in sunlight or shade. They consume nearly 5 kg of carbon a year, and provide habitats for insects and other wildlife.
The walls’ structures are made from recycled coffee grounds, and all removed plants are recycled back into biomass.
If the trial is successful, they will be rolled out elsewhere on the SWR network.
