UK: A smartphone booking app which calculates split ticketing options has been launched by Ctrip, the parent company of flight booking platform Skyscanner.
The intricacies of the UK ticketing system mean it is sometimes possible for passengers to save money by booking separate tickets for different sections of a through journey, rather than just one ticket, even if they do not need to change trains.
Developed by Ctrip Group with technology from Evolvi Rail Systems, the TrainPal app does not charge a booking fee, allows passengers to obtain railcard discounts, and will sell electronic tickets for all routes where operators offer them.
The company told Railway Gazette that it produces split ticketing options by calculating all stops and ticket types in real-time.
