Skanska Costain Strabag JV has awarded Pacadar UK the first of two contracts for the production of precast concrete tunnel segments for HS2’s London tunnels. The 58 000 segments will be manufactured at a factory on the Isle of Grain in Kent which recently completed the supply of1 2 km of segments for the Thames Tideway water project.

Following a prosecution brought by the Office of Rail & Road, Daventry International Rail Freight Terminal operator WH Malcolm Ltd has been fined £6·5m after being found guilty of negligence over the 2017 death of an 11 year old boy who was electrocuted after climbing on a stationary wagon. ORR’s investigation found WH Malcom had failed to assess the risk of unauthorised access to the terminal, and failed to implement appropriate measures to prevent unauthorised access to a part of the site where there were frequent freight movements and 25 kV 50 Hz overhead electrification.
The Office of Rail & Road is consulting on reducing the period passengers must wait before seeking a complaint resolution with the Rail Ombudsman from 40 to 20 days. It is also seeking views on updating the ways in which complaints can be submitted to train operators, including via social media channels, and seeking input on the development of a new suite of performance metrics to enable better benchmarking of quality and timeliness in complaints handling.
